Ice Cream makers with a self-imposed mission to Lick Global Warming. Ben & Jerry’s manages course administration and fully funds the college.
Ben & Jerry’s was set up by two childhood friends, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. A commitment to thought provoking causes and ethical ingredient sourcing is as important as fun named and flavoured ice cream.
Back in 2002, we embarked on a programme to 'Lick Global Warming'. Now we're facing up to the fact that our Friesian Friends' flatulence contributes to global warming.
In fact your average Dolly or Daisy releases around 400gms of methane a day through belching and breaking wind - methane has 23 times the warming potential of CO2, so reducing their emissions is important.
So, from breaking wind to building more wind farms, we're intent on reducing our carbon hoofprint, from cow to carton. The plan is to reduce our total climate impact by 10% to maintain our status as the world's first Climate Neutral ice cream - here's to creaming it.
As co-founder Jerry Greenfield said:
'Like everybody in the world, with the exception of the people in the United States government, I believe that global climate change is an incredible problem and we need to do something about it!
Ben and I built Ben & Jerry’s on the idea that business has a responsibility to the community and environment and now, when we face a problem like global warming, and you understand that the hugest impacts on global warming come from business and industry, I think business needs to take a leading role, business can be a source of progressive change.
It is this belief that has led us to create the Climate Change College, giving young people the skills to inspire businesses and citizens to start addressing the issue of climate change'
