Facing the New Climate.

WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.

WWF is working to protect people, nature and wildlife from the devastating impacts of climate change.

What’s the problem?

Climate change is happening. Scientists agree that the main cause is how we produce and use energy from fossil fuels -namely coal, oil and natural gas.

The power sector is the world’s biggest climate polluter - producing much of the world’s electricity by burning coal which releases vast amounts of CO2. If we want to make big cuts in pollution we need to move away from coal.

What can be done?

We must achieve a peak and decline in greenhouse gas emissions within the next 8 years and keep global warming below a 2°C threshold.

We need to switch to clean and efficient energy in electricity production, transport, and heating and cooling. The amazing truth is that these tools are already available and affordable today.

What is WWF doing?

WWF is working around the world to push governments to pass laws that reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, and create a post-Kyoto international agreement that binds countries to further emissions reductions beyond 2012.

We also work with key businesses to help them reduce CO2 emissions, advocate progressive policies and engage with their customers.

The world’s most vulnerable are being affected first. That is why we also work with local communities to build adaptation strategies to ease impacts that are already unavoidable. This also includes measuring the impacts of climate change on wildlife, in particular the polar bear, which is uniquely susceptible as it stands at the top of the arctic food chain.
