Julian v. Blücher (25), Germany
Background: Works for a consultancy implementing CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) and Climate Neutral Strategies
Project: Julian has a fascination for Solar Energy and has already had success installing solar panels on his university.
In his campaign, Julian realized a federal CO2 campaign: with a Solarlounge he visited 13 german Universities and activated students to install solar power plants on their campus by:
- Offering free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and a nap in a Solar lounge (mobile bar, fed by solar energy)
- Giving a lecture on Climate Change supported by pictures from the Arctic
- Explaining benefits of solar energy and describing possibilities to finance other events out of that, as he did with: www.unisolar-karlsruhe.de
- Spreading a how-to guide for installing solar power plants
- Arranging workshops and brainstorming sessions for local implementation
Target:
Help implement solar panel projects at 3 universities:
http://www.study-guide-bw.com/events/1671/
Campaign Results:
- Six out of 13 Universities now have initiated their own solar power plants
- a second branch of the Unisolar concept with 10kWp at his Univesity was build:
- in total 150.000 € have been fundraised as loans
- reduction of 750 tons of CO2 in 25 years
- monitoring and visualizing on a digital panel the amount of CO2 cut down at all Universities: thousands of students are sensitized every day
Next Steps:
- Expand the success story by an Unisolar Network; the 2nd federal meeting will take place at the end of January 2008:
- crosslinking existing and start-up solar initiatives via an internet platform
- linking the Unisolar structures by dint of a german coordination centre financed by the “Youth Committee for Renewable Energy at the Federal Ministry for the Environment in Germany”
- Unisolar has its own Corporate Identity and is “self-made climate protection”: it is modular, can be realised in a short period and gives immediate feelings of success; a second branch is e.g.: www.unisolar-leipzig.de
- once founded, Unisolar structures are easily scalable and perspectively offer an ideal pillar for further climate protection activities (investments in heat insulation, CHP generation or the like)
- on the long run building a Climate Neutral Network of Universities.
Proudest moments:
- meeting the first afro-american lady at the Northpole and supporting the scientific community at the Northpole: http://www.spiegel.de/unispiegel/studium/0,1518,479917,00.html
